Why do we celebrate Shivratri? 

ఒక సారి బ్రహ్మ, విష్ణు మూర్తుల మధ్య అహంకారం తలెత్తి అది చివరకు ఎవరెవరు ఎంత గొప్పవారో? తేల్చుకోవాలనే స్థితికి పోటీపడసాగినారు. 

వారిని గమనిస్తున్న పరమశివుడు వారికి కలిగిన అహంభావాన్ని అణగదొక్కి వారి ఇద్దరికీ చక్కని గుణపాఠం చెప్పాలనే ఉద్దేశంతో మాఘమాసం చతుర్దశినాడు వారి ఇరువురుకు మధ్య జ్యోతిర్లింగంగా రూపుదాల్చాడు.

వారు ఇరువురు ఆలింగం యొక్క ఆది అంతాలకు తెలుసుకోవాలని విష్ణుమూర్తి వరాహరూపం దాల్చి జ్యోతిర్లింగం అడుగు భాగాన్ని వెతుకుతూవెళ్ళగా, బ్రహ్మదేవుడు హంసరూపందాల్చి ఆకాశం అంతా ఎగిరాడు. 

చివరకు కనుక్కోలేక ఓడిపోయి పరమేశ్వరుని శరణువేడుకుంటారు.

అప్పుడు ఆ పరమ శివుడు తన నిజరూపంతో దర్శనమిచ్చి అనుగ్రహించి వారి అహంకారాన్ని పోగొట్టినాడు. 

దానితో బ్రహ్మ విష్ణువులు పరమేశ్వరుని ఆధిక్యతను గుర్తించి వానికి విశేష పూజలతో సేవించి కీర్తించినారు. ఆ పర్వదినమే "మహాశివరాత్రి" అయ్యింది.

Once upon a time there was arrogance between the idols of Brahma and Vishnu and how great was it in the end? Competed for the status quo.


Lord Shiva, who was watching them, formed a Jyotirlinga between the two of them in the month of Chaturdashinadu with the intention of subduing their ego and giving them a good lesson.


As they both searched for the foot of the Jyotirlinga in the form of Vishnumurti in the form of a boar, Brahma flew across the sky in the form of a swan.

Eventually they find themselves lost and seek refuge in God.


Then Lord Shiva appeared with His reality and blessed them and lost their pride.


With it, Brahma Vishnu recognized the supremacy of Parameswara and glorified him with special pujas. That day itself became "Mahashivaratri".
